Florida Fossil Hunting Permits

Do I need a fossil permit?

You are not required to obtain a fossil permit if your sole intention is to collect and keep fossilized shark teeth. However, if you wish to collect more than just shark teeth, we highly recommend purchasing a fossil permit from the state of Florida.

The fossil permit will cover you for any vertebrate fossils you may find and wish to keep, including those of reptiles, mammals, fish (excluding sharks), and birds. While it is not mandatory, we encourage you to purchase a permit before your tour with us.

Although it is not required, we ask that guests wishing to keep these vertebrate fossils purchase a permit. The permit is affordable, easy to obtain, and only costs $5. Florida Fossil Permits can be found on the Florida Museum of Natural History's website through the link below:

Florida Fossil Hunting Permit Information

If you're planning to go fossil hunting in Florida, it’s important to understand the state's rules and regulations, which help protect the state's unique natural history. Whether you are exploring the Peace River or other fossil-rich areas, you will need a Florida Fossil Permit to collect fossils on state-owned lands.

What Is a Florida Fossil Permit?

A Florida Fossil Permit is required for anyone collecting fossils from state-managed lands. This permit ensures that fossil hunting is done legally and responsibly, with consideration for both the environment and the preservation of these ancient treasures. Fossil permits help regulate activities that could potentially harm the environment and keep fossil sites sustainable for future generations of collectors and researchers.

How to Obtain a Fossil Permit

In Florida, the fossil permit is typically very affordable, with a standard fee of $5 for individuals who want to collect fossils legally in public areas. The process to obtain a permit is simple, and you can typically apply online or at specific locations such as state parks or conservation areas. Always check for any additional local requirements or specific permits for particular sites before you head out.

What Does the Permit Allow?

Once you obtain the permit, you are allowed to collect fossils in designated areas of Florida’s public lands. The permit grants you permission to dig and search for fossils in specified regions, such as riverbeds, beaches, and certain public conservation areas. However, this permit does not allow you to collect fossils from private lands or protected sites, so always make sure to seek permission from landowners when hunting on private property.

Key Regulations

Dig Below the Water Line: Fossil hunting must be done below the water line. Digging above the water line, particularly into riverbanks, is prohibited to prevent environmental damage.

Respect Protected Sites: Fossil hunting is not allowed in areas designated as protected for cultural or ecological preservation. Always check local guidelines for restrictions.

Permits are for Non-Commercial Use: The permit is intended for personal, non-commercial use. If you plan to sell or trade fossils, you will need a special permit from the state.

Proper Collection Practices: Collect only what you need for personal enjoyment or study. Always leave fossils in their natural state if they seem particularly rare or fragile, to preserve the integrity of fossil sites.

Why Is a Fossil Permit Important?

The Florida Fossil Permit ensures that fossil hunters can enjoy their hobby without damaging the ecosystems or depleting valuable scientific resources. It also helps maintain the delicate balance of these prehistoric sites, making sure that future generations can experience the same excitement of uncovering Florida’s past.

By obtaining a permit and following the guidelines, you’re contributing to the protection of Florida’s fossil heritage and ensuring that fossil hunting remains a sustainable and rewarding activity for everyone.
